Adding Some Wizitude To Hill Country BBQ (vs Clippers)

Friday night in the city and the Wiz Happy Hour crew headed to Hill Country Barbecue for some Texas style pregaming with Shiner Bock, BBQ, and of course delicious (and free) side dishes. We sipped beer out of mason jars and talked about the previous game's buzzer beater before we headed into the arena to watch the Wizards take care of Blake Griffin and the Los Angeles Clippers with special guests, "Nats Twitter" (Photos). Here's what went down:

Hill Country Barbecue (which I can't stop calling Hill Country Buffet) is a Texas style meat market (always makes me laugh). You basically walk around to different booths of meat and sides and order food by the pound and then eat in a giant mess hall cafeteria. They have multiple bars, and we spent our time in the front bar which is a very chill and not very crowded spot that takes you away from that dining hall feel and into a more comfortable and relaxing happy hour spot.

Happy Hour isn't too amazing here. They have a neat Texas beer selection but it is only at a discount via $20 pitchers. Instead they try to say $3 PBR is a special when at every other bar in DC (including the expensive bars by the White House) that is the regular price. The other drink specials are $4 house wine, $5 rail drinks, $5 rail shots (ew), and $5 house margaritas, fairly standard, not amazing.

At HCB he only beers on tap come from Spoetzl Brewery, otherwise known as Shiner. (They did sneak in a DC Brau Corruption IPA to the tap selection).  On this night there were 5 different Shiner beers on tap and the choice selection of the group was the White Wing Belgian White (Witbier) which was much better than the standard Shiner Bock. Oh, and they serve all your beers to you in mason jars. So there is that.

There are no food specials but at the bar you can order appetizer style items like Brisket tacos, Chili Wings, Rib Tips, etc. and avoid the meat market process.

After the happy hour we met up with "Nats Twitter" inside the Verizon Center. This is a group of die hard Washington Nationals fans who found common interests on Twitter and attend ballgames together. Some of them even flew in from across the country! They were in town for Saturday's Nats Fest (join us!) but were taking in a Wizards game to see what everyone is talking about in town. It is always fun to catch up with them and I can't wait until Saturday!

Next time you are at Hill Country bar, be sure to check out their beer glass fridge. It has some random Texas bumper stickers on it and a brand new addition. A Wizards DC logo! Thanks to Nick from the group. We like spreading the Wizards cheer so we hooked up Nick with a free ticket to the game and we got to watch another amazing home win for the Wiz. Join us next time why don't you? See you out there & Go Wiz!
